英語日記：現地の言葉を喋れるか？

I am on the business trip to Europe. One of my colleagues told me that he tried to speak in the local language as much as possible to show his courtesies. When we went out for dinner, he was trying to speak German. Though he didn’t speak German well, he at least got attentions and people seemed to be friendlier. I think it is a technique that we could probably use when we are on the international business trips.

ヨーロッパに出張に来ています。同僚の1人は必ず現地の言葉を覚えてきてそれを使おうとします。彼なりの誠意の見せ方だそうです。夕食のときに、一生懸命ドイツ語を使っていました。うまいとは言いがたいのですが、レストランの方々や周囲の方々は彼のその姿をほほえましくみており、場が和みました。海外出張をするときに使えるテクニックだと思いました。私は。。。といえば、おはようございます、こんにちはなどの挨拶以外は、英語で通しました。

英語日記：通訳は苦手（再び）

As I have written earlier, I am not good at simultaneous interpretation. I could not take any notes and I could not remember many things from the meeting.

以前も書きましたが通訳は苦手です。通訳をしていると、メモは取れないし、会議の内容もうろ覚えです。

英語日記；中国での地震

I was very surprised hearing the news of the earth quake hit in China.
I was just there about couple hours ago..... Never expected to the disaster to hit the country,

I am very sorry for the earthquake disaster, and I'll try to be your help in ways that I could contribute.

For now, I'll cut down at least $200-400/month for donation by bringing my lunch bag, not eating out, and cooking food at home.

It was my concert this evening. I wasn't very much satisfied with my level of performance.

I was asked to interpret the speech of the CEO at the party. I am not good at simultaneous interpretation, so I was bit uncomfortable.

通訳を頼まれて、社長のスピーチを通訳しました。あまり得意ではないので、ちょっとやりにくかったです。

I went for shopping to get new clothes for my new workplace. It is sad that there are not many clothes for executive women, and whenever I get together with my friends, we talk about clothes.

新しい職場にあう洋服を探しに行きました。キャリア向けの洋服が少ないのは、本当に悩みの種で、ここ最近、友人とあうとその話ばかりです。

One week is over!! I am so tired... Many new things in the new environment and I am overwhelmed.

やっと１週間が終わりました。疲れたー。新しいことばかりを新しい環境でやっているので、圧倒されっぱなしです。

The first row of books in the bookshelf fell by the earthquake this evening. I need to clean up my room!!

今日の夜の地震で、本棚の１段目の本が全部落ちていました。片付けなくてはいけません。

英語日記：仕事に溺れる

I feel like I am drawing at work... I'll survive, but it takes time to get used to it...

仕事に溺れている気がします。きっと乗り切ると思いますが、時間がかかりそうです。

こちらも休みがちにならないように、がんばりたいものです。

There are many new faces at work. They look so fresh, reminding me of the first day at work.

英語日記：脱臼！？

I thought my shoulder was dislocated since it was hurting so much.
I went to the hospital and found out that it was nearly dislocated .... *oooooouch!! * I was just sleeping!!!!!!

肩がめちゃくちゃいたかったので、脱臼したのかと思ってしまいました。
病院へ行ったら脱臼にかなり近い状態であるようで、肩を入れ直してもらいました。いたーーーい！！
ただ、寝てただけなのに！

I was a guest speaker at the Clarins spring event. I have talked about time management and fashion (!).

今日はクラランスの春のイベントでのゲストスピーカーでした。時間管理やファッション（！）について話をしました。

英語日記：舞台を観に行く

I went to see the Turandot produced by Miyamoto Amon at Akasaka ACT. The interpretation of the Turandot was very interesting although the performers need bit more voice lessons.

赤坂ACTでやっている宮本亜門演出のトゥーランドットを観てきました。演出がとても面白かったですが、キャストはもう少しボイストレーニングを積んだ方が良さそうです。

英語日記：食事会が続くと．．．

I have been having so many dinner/lunch meetings with my clients & friends. I need to rest my stomach since it is getting quite tired.

食事会が続いています。胃を休めないと、胃がだいぶ疲れて来ています。

春は旅立ちの季節なので、どうしてもこういうことが増えますね。皆さんもお体にお気をつけてくださいね。

Right after I came back from London, I went to dinner with my old acquaintances. We went to the Italian restaurant near Roppongi. The food was great!!

ロンドンから戻って来てすぐに旧友達とディナーへ行きました。六本木近くのイタリアンレストランでしたが、すごく美味しかったです。（間に合ってよかったです）

My flight from London to Tokyo was cancelled and I have to flight to Frankfurt to catch flight from there to Narita. What a long day... *sigh*

I bumped into my old friend from elementary school in London last night. I was very surprised to see him such far place from Tokyo!!

昨日は小学校のときのお友達にロンドンで遭遇しました。東京からこんな離れたところで偶然に会うとはホントにびっくりです。

英語日記：ミュージカルを見に行く

I went to see the Phantom of the Opera at the Her Majesty. Although I have seen this musical over 20 times, I thought the performance was very bad. I should have gone to the Covent Garden, where Eugene Onegin was performed.

オペラ座の怪人を見に行きました。２０回以上観ている舞台ですが、今回の舞台のできはよくありませんでした。Eugene Oneginをみにいけばよかったです。

英語日記：南インド料理

I went to dinner with people from the financial institution. We had southern Indian food. I was very surprised that the level of restaurants in London went up drastically for past 10 years.

金融機関の人たちと一緒に、南インド料理を食べにいきました。この１０年でロンドンのレストランのレベルがものすごくあがったことに驚いています。

I had dinner with people from the trading companies at the Portuguese restaurant in London. It was my first time tasting the Portuguese food. Very tasty. Had a great time.

商社の人たちと一緒にポルトガル料理をロンドンでたべました。初めてだったのですが、美味しかったです。いい時間でした。

I had a visitor from Singapore this afternoon. I had some troubles understanding Singapore English (so called Singlish).

今日の午後はシンガポールからの来客でした。シンガポール英語（Singlishと呼ばれています）を理解するのがちょっと大変でした。

Unlike yesterday's bad weather, it was very nice day, so I went for a walk. I found cherry trees are blooming.

I just came back from Kansai to finish some of my current projects as well as giving a lecture at the alma mater. I will be flying to London next week, so I need to unpack my suitcase and do my laundry and pack my stuff again!!! In order to start new life in April, I need to finish up many things. Busy March. *sigh*

現在進行中のプロジェクトを終了させるため、そして、母校での講演のために関西に行っていたのですが、帰ってきました。来週から今度はロンドンです。スーツケースの中身を出して、洗濯をして、またつめなければいけません。４月から新しい生活がはじまるので、その準備のためにいろいろと終わらせているのですが、とっても忙しい３月です。はぁ．．．

I went to the alma mater. It has been 11 years since I've visited there. 11 years feel so short, but quite long time because I have changed so much.

１１年ぶりの母校です。１１年が短く感じると同時に、とても長く感じました。この１１年で私はとっても変わったので。

英語日記；２０年ぶりに会う友人は．．．

I met a friend of mine from elementary school. It has been at least 20 years since I saw him last time!!! We both are grown up in some ways, but haven't changed much (hahaha!).

小学校時代のお友達に会いました。最後にあったときから２０年は経っているはずです。お互い大人になったともいえるのですが、全然変わってないところも（笑）　とっても懐かしかったです。

I visited my friend, who is a professor of German language. She helped me to improve my German pronunciation of German aria, An Chloe, and the Queen of Night's Aria.

ドイツ語の教授をしている友人を訪ねました。ドイツ語のアリア、クロエへと夜の女王のアリアの発音をよくするための指導をしてくださいました。

I am traveling to Kansai. I am visiting my aunt over the weekend and planning to visit some of my friends living in Kansai area.

関西へ向かっています。今週末は叔母の家に泊まり、その後、関西に住む友人たちに会う予定です。

I went to see the Grandiva Ballet with my friend. I love comical plays, so I really enjoy the ballet.

I'm preparing for my lecture at NAIST on March 12th. I was planning to utilize my old presentations, but I have decided to make new presentation.

３月１２日に母校の奈良先端科学技術大学院大学で行う講演の準備をしています。過去のプレゼンをつかおうと思っていたのですが、新しくつくることにしました。

I've been eating out for three days straight. My stomach is getting tired from eating out. I'll try to rest my stomach over the weekend.

仕事関係で外食が３日ほど続いていて、胃が疲れています。週末にかけて、ゆっくり胃を休めようとおもいます。

We had a New Year's Party at the SOPRA ACQUA, the Italian restaurant at Kagurazaka, last night. It was not only the New Year's Party, but also the farewell party of Naoki Kondo-san, who is starting a nursery in Mie from April. We had great dinner. I wish the best of luck to Kondo-san!!!

新年会のディナーを神楽坂にある友人のイタリアンのお店、SOPRA ACQUAで行いました。実は新年会だけではなく、友人の近藤直樹さんが４月から三重で保育園をオープンするため、お別れ会でもありました。近藤さんがんばってね！！

英語日記：母校での講演

I will be holding a lecture at the alma mater on March 12th. I haven't visited Nara for 11 years, so I am excited!!

３月１２日に母校で講演をすることになりました。奈良にはもう１１年も行ってないので（卒業したのはその前ですが、卒業後に学会で母校へ行っているので）、すごく楽しみです！

Note: alma materは母校という意味のラテン語ですが、英語でも使われます。

今日はリサーチ会社の方の講演会に行ってきました。人の講演を見るといろいろと勉強になります。

英語日記：気持ちの切り替え

I had very important meeting with the senior executive of a large corporation this morning. I had to switch my mode from the artist mode to the business person mode. Took me some time to calm myself down from the excitement of the concert!!!

今朝は、大手企業のポジションの高い方との大事な会議でした。アーティストモードからビジネスモードへ気持ちを切り替える必要があったのですが、昨日のコンサートからの興奮覚めやらずで、時間がかかってしまいました。会議は無事終了です。

I was performing at the prize winner concert of the All Nippon Players Association Lady's Contest this afternoon. It was a great experience to perform in front of many people. I appreciate all the people who came to the concert even in this bad weather condition!!

今日は、全日本演奏家協会のレディースコンクール入選者コンサートでした。たくさんの人の前で演奏をするのはとてもいい経験になります。天候が悪かったにも関わらず来てくださった多くの方々に感謝いたします。

英語日記：休むのも仕事

I will hold my recital tomorrow. My voice teacher told me "resting your voice is the part of your job". But I am uncomfortable for stopping my practice here. Well... I'll rest today.

明日はリサイタルです。声楽の先生から、休むのも仕事、と言われているのですが、練習していないと不安です。でも、今日はお休みします。

英語日記＆英語表現：肩こり

I have very bad headache from very bad stiff neck.

There is no right term for "katakori" in English. *sigh*

ひどい肩こりからひどい頭痛です。英語には肩こりの表現が無いのは、肩こりは筋肉のつき方などの骨格の特徴から東洋人特有のものだからだそう。辛いですね。

ところで、肩(shoulder)のさす場所が日本語と英語では違うように思います。

私がイメージする肩こりとは、首から肩甲骨くらいまでが張っているイメージ。それはたぶん英語ではneckのさす場所。

shoulderというと、どちらかというと、肩甲骨のところあたり？　しかも、shoulder painと表現すると、事故かスポーツをしていて無理をしていたくなったというようなイメージがあります。

英語日記：雑誌のインタビュー

I participated in the magazine interview this afternoon. We've talked about the healthy food. I personally believe that food is one of the most important elements in my life.

今日は雑誌のインタビューでした。健康食品についていろいろと話をしたのですが、私は食が人生の中でとても大事なものの１つであると考えています。

昨今、餃子事件がニュースをにぎわせていますが、食の大切さを改めて考えさせる事件だったと思います。

英語日記：ドラリオンを観に行きました

I went to see the Dralion by Cirque Du Soleil with my friend this afternoon. The performance was great. I admire the professional attitude of all the performers. Even though it was an entertainment performance, there are many things that we can learn from there.

エンタメ日記にも書きましたが、シルクドゥソレイユのドラリオンを見てきました。パフォーマーのプロフェッショナルとしての態度に深く感銘を受けました。エンターテイメントかもしれませんが、社会人として多くのことを学べると思います。

英語日記：ジャーナリズムシンポジウム

There was "the Japan Times-University of Tokyo Joint International Symposium on Journalism" at the Tokyo University this afternoon. It made to think about the raison d'tre of the English newspapers.

ジャパンタイムズと東京大学のジョイントシンポジウムがありました。日本における英語新聞のレーゾンドートル（存在価値）を考えさせられました。

Note: raison d'treはフランス語から来ていますが、英語でも使います。

英語日記：組織作り

I had discussion with the CEO of the listed company this afternoon. He is concerned with the organization development. In order to develop the organization to the next stage, the organization must face the "change". It is the decision of the top management to lead the change or keep the company size as is.

今日、上場会社の社長とディスカッションをしたのですが、彼は組織をどう育てていくのかについていろいろと悩んでいました。組織を次のステージに持っていくには変革はさけて通れません。変革をリードして会社を次のステージに持っていくのか、今のままの規模でやっていくのかは、トップマネジメントの決断しだいだと思います。

組織作りほど難しいものは無いなぁと最近痛感します。絶対にうまく行くと思っていても、壊れてしまったり、無理だろうと思っていたのにうまくいったり．．．　

英語日記：居てくれてありがとう

I'm going through rough time. I really appreciate for my friends who are supporting me to go through this.

I was eating my dinner alone at the restaurant I used to go very often with my partner last night. A friend of mine who found out that I was eating alone gave me a call from London. She cheered me up. Thank you for being there for me even though you are in London!!

最近ちょっと辛い時期を過ごしているのですが、友人たちの支えでなんとか乗り切ろうとしています。

昨夜、いきつけのレストランだったお店で久しぶりに食事をしました。でも１人で食事をしていたのを知った友人が、ロンドンから電話をかけてくれて、元気だせーって言ってくれました。こういう友達がいるって本当にありがたいことです。
